25th anniversary Shobha's story

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Shobha and her family lived in very difficult circumstances on the streets of Kolkata. One of the first girls to be supported by HOPE, Shobha went on to complete further education and is now a teacher at a HOPE Creche.

Shobha lived with her parents and siblings on the streets of Kolkata. Her father was a rickshaw driver.

Shobha moved into HOPE’s care at the age of 15. A very calm and quiet girl, she worked hard at Seadah Loreto School before going on to complete a bachelor’s degree and an additional computing course.

After her studies she trained to be a teacher. She is now working as a teacher at HOPE’s Panditya Creche. She is married to a man who has a government job and she has a son.

HOPE has supported the whole family. Shobha’s father works at Hope Hospital and her younger brother Bijay is a house-father at one of HOPE’s Residential Childcare Centres. Shobha’s younger sister Sonia was also supported by HOPE, from the age of five, and like her sister completed a teacher training course. She is now happily married.
