About HOPE Hospital & The Extension Project
HOPE Hospital was established in 2008, through a generous donation from Weight Watchers Ireland, to provide for the secondary health care needs of the street and slum dwelling individuals and communities of Kolkata. The hospital was set up in response to the failing healthcare system in Kolkata, due to a serious bed crisis, overcrowding, lack of staff and an ineffective and poor service delivery from the State run hospitals, particularly for abandoned and destitute people who call the streets of the city their home.
The extension project plans to extend the ground and third floors of the present HOPE Hospital to the corresponding floors of the adjacent building. The ground floor of the new complex will house a CT scan room, pathology, endoscopy & colonoscopy room, a waiting room and toilet with modern facilities. The third floor will have a general operation theatre, an eye surgery theatre (both relocated from the current complex), one surgeon’s room, one toilet and a separate day care operation theatre for minor operations. By relocating the two operation theatres to the new facility we will be able to expand the ICU from 4 beds to 14, which will set up the provision of an increased number of surgeries.
Once completed the new HOPE Hospital will allow use to provide quality care, diagnosis, treatment & medication to many many more street and slum dwellers and people living below the poverty line, who would otherwise have no access to healthcare.
