The HOPE Hospital, established in May 2008, caters to the secondary healthcare needs of street-connected children and adults. Throughout Kolkata, and indeed India, those residing on the streets and in the slums are deprived of access to adequate healthcare as they are unregistered citizens. Deprived of a birth certificate, passport and any form of identification, Government-run hospitals refuse to treat such individuals, leaving them highly vulnerable and at high-risk to ill-health.
To meet these objectives, HOPE Hospital has an in-patient department with an intensive care unit (34 general beds and 4 beds in the ICU), an out-patient department, diagnostic centre, surgical department and a new pharmacy. Each of these departments coordinate and support each other to ensure the delivery of high quality care and service. Last year alone, 11,155 patients received healthcare treatment in HOPE Hospital’s in and out-patient departments, 253 surgeries were performed and 655 children were immunised.
